Private First Class Fred A. Humphreys in WWI uniform
Private First Class Fred A. Humphreys, Company A, 4th Infantry Regiment. Killed in action on July 26, 1918.

Private First Class Fred A. Humphreys was a Casa Grande resident who made the supreme sacrifice on the Western Front during World War I. Serving in Company A of the 4th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, United States Army, his unit was thrust into some of the most brutal campaigns of the war, including the Aisne, Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, and Meuse-Argonne offensives.

Known for his bravery, PFC Humphreys was wounded in action but chose to return to the front lines. On July 26, 1918, during the fierce Allied actions of the Aisne-Marne Offensive near Château-Thierry, France, he was killed in action. For his ultimate sacrifice, he was posthumously authorized the Purple Heart and the World War I Victory Medal with five distinct battle clasps.

News of his death trickled back slowly to Arizona, where the Casa Grande Bulletin ultimately honored him as one of the original Gold Stars on the Casa Grande Valley service flag. Following the end of the war, his remains were repatriated to American soil, arriving back in Arizona where he was laid to rest with full military honors at Mountain View Cemetery in Casa Grande on January 29, 1921.
